Week in Review (Dec. 12 - Dec. 18)

Men's and Women's Basketball were the only Hawk teams in action this past week. The Lady Hawks battled non-conference foe in a home contest on Dec. 17 while the Fighting Hawks faced off with No. 15 George Washington in road contest, also on Dec. 17.

UMES started the week on a good note, as senior guard Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, Md.) was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending on December 18, 2005. Sophomore Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich.) was also noted as one of the leagues top performers.

Kennedy had 24 points, five steals and four rebounds in a triple overtime loss to Bucknell on Saturday, December 17. She made a career high seven three-pointers, including five in overtime. The senior from Baltimore, Md. connected on two three-pointers in the final 30 seconds of the first overtime to force a second OT. Her 24 points also tied her career high.

Also earning recognition as one of the conference's top performers last week was sophomore Kristi Veltkamp who had a career-high 27 points and added eight rebounds and three blocks in the loss to Bucknell.

UMES earned another accolade in the early week as freshman guard Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md.) was named the MEAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday, December 19.

Tyson was one of three players in double-digits for the Hawks in a loss to #15 George Washington on Saturday, December 17. The guard from Baltimore, Md. picked apart the GW defense as he made his way to the free throw line 10 times (career-high), going 9-of-10 (career-high FTM) to finish with 12 points. This was his fifth double-digit scoring game of the season and his third highest scoring output. Tyson also compiled four rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Also earning recognition as one of the conference's top performers last week was senior Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill.) who scored a game-high 21 points, along with nine rebounds in the loss to #15 George Washington. This was his fourth 20-point game of the season.

In Women's Basketball action last weekend, Veltkamp scored a career high 27 points and Kennedy tied her career high with 24, but it was not enough as Bucknell edged UMES, 93-92, in a triple overtime contest on Saturday, Dec. 17.

The Lady Hawks, fresh off a three-point overtime loss to Howard a week ago, shot 39% from the field compared to 46% by the Bison. Bucknell (4-4) held leads late in regulation and in the closing moments of the first two overtime periods, but could not hold on as UMES (1-5) tied the score each time.

The Bison's largest lead of the first overtime came at 68-62, but Kennedy, who made five 3-pointers in overtime and seven in the game, connected on two in the final 30 seconds to tie the game at 68.

Bucknell took a seven point advantage with less than 90 seconds left in the second overtime, but Kennedy quickly made another 3-pointer, and a driving layup by Qiana Cheatham (Baltimore, Md.) with five seconds left tied the score at 79-79 and sent the game to a third overtime.

The Bison scored the first three points of the final overtime, but another 3-pointer by Kennedy and a jumper by Cheatham gave the maroon and gray an 84-82 advantage to equal their largest lead in overtime.

A jumper by Kesha Champion tied the score at 89 with just over a minute to play and was part of an 8-0 run that gave the Bison a 93-89 lead.

Bucknell went 15 of 19 from the charity stripe in the overtimes, compared to just 6-13 by the Lady Hawks. The Bison hit their final four free-throws in overtime to seal the win. Rachael Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn.) connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make the final score 93-92.

Bucknell built a 22-10 advantage early in the game before a Goodwin lay-up capped a 12-1 run for the maroon and gray. The Bison held a two point lead at the half.

The final score at the end of regulation was 58-58.

The key to the game was free throw shooting. UMES made just 16 of 39, while Bucknell connected on 22 of 31.

Veltkamp, who made 10 of 18 from the field, also added eight rebounds and three blocks. Kennedy had a game high five steals, while Jamila Griffith (Barbados, West Indies) pulled down a game high 12 rebounds. Cheatham finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Goodwin dished out nine assists.

In Men's Basketball action, Danilo Pinnock scored 18 points to lead five George Washington players in double figures and the 15th-ranked Colonials beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 98-72 on Saturday, Dec. 17.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu had 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the Colonials (8-0), off to their best start since 1953-54 when they won their first 11 games.

Carl Elliott had 16 points and seven assists for George Washington, while Maureece Rice had 15 points and six assists, and Mike Hall added 11 points.

George Washington took control with a 20-4 run midway through the first half. Hall's 3-pointer capped the spurt and gave the Colonials a 36-17 lead with 9:13 remaining.

Tim Parham led Maryland-Eastern Shore (2-8) with 21 points and nine rebounds and Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md.) added 17 points and eight rebounds.

Omar Williams of George Washington and Qavotstaraj Waddell (Norfolk, Va.) of Maryland-Eastern Shore were ejected with 4:20 remaining in the first half for leaving their benches during a scuffle that carried into the laps of spectators seated in the front row along the baseline.

The altercation followed Art Valentine's (New York, N.Y.) intentional foul on Pinnock, who got up and charged Valentine. Several players spilled into the seats but no punches were thrown.

Upcoming Week (Dec. 19 - Dec. 25)

Men's Basketball faces Brown on Tuesday, Dec. 20, battling the Bears in a road contest beginning at 7 p.m. Women's Basketball will also be on the road, facing St. Francis (NY) in a non-conference decision on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
