MILLSBORO, Delaware — In a field that featured five of the Top 10 teams in the country, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawk Bowling Team came home in fourth place out of 16 teams. The Hawks piled up seven wins to three losses and one of those wins came against the defending National Champions, Farleigh Dickinson University (FDU).
UMES, improving to 23-5 on the year, opened the event a little slow, falling to Sacred Heart University 85-783. The difficult oil pattern threw the Hawks but some coaching readjustments got them back on track. They rattled off four straight wins, taking down St. Peter's (860-703), Fairleigh Dickinson (886-876), Adelphi (819-669) and Delaware State (875-599).
Michelle Wallace seemed to adjust the quickest for UMES, rolling just a 123 in game one the freshman finished up the day with a 218 and 215 in games four and five. Christine King had a 218 and Laura Zanrucha a 202 to mark the games over 200.
Wallace was the highest finisher in total pins on the day for UMES, averaging a 176.80, 13th overall. Zanrucha was 16th with a 173.80 and King was 18th with a 170.4. Jessica Worsley was 21st with a 168.6 and Marion Singleton was 54th with a 157.25 while rolling four of the five games. Jamie Culbreth saw action in game four with a 146.
"We had an outstanding tournament," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "We bowled well in the team games and put up some impressive numbers on a very difficult shot. Most of all I am pleased with the way most of the girls responded to coaching, they made the necessary adjustments to elevate their game, it showed some team maturity today."
On Sunday, November 19, 2006 the Hawks bowled five Baker games. Here they saw some stiff competition. They defeated Cheyney (749-396), Delaware State (755-636) and Southern University (696-626). Those wins were staggered however as New Jersey City University (NJCU) topped the Hawks in game two (745-680) and Vanderbilt topped UMES in game four (637-852).
"It would have been nice to win another one or two matches," added Brummell. "It was tough though, we had some really talented teams and young ladies out there both days."
Vanderbilt, ranked fourth in the country won the event, tallying 8,386 total pins and had a perfect 10-0 record.
NJCU came home second with 8,124 pins and an 9-1 mark. FDU was third with 8,111 pins and went 8-2. UMES' 7-3 mark tallied 7,740 pins for fourth place. Sacred Heart, the only other team to top UMES came home fifth with an 8-2 mark and 7.620 pins.
Southern, Morgan State, Delaware State, Grambling State and Hampton rounded out the top ten teams. Adelphi, St. Peter's, Norfolk State, Howard, Winston-Salem State and Cheyney rounded out the 16-team field.
Vanderbilt rolled the highest team game of the day with a 962 and NJCU had the highest Baker game with an 803.
"All in all it was a great event," said Brummell. "The staff and workers from Millsboro Lanes made it another outstanding tournament. We received a lot of positive feedback and the student-athletes enjoyed themselves. We can't wait to do it again next year," added Brummell.
