UMES HOLDS EARLY LEAD AT MEAC BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Norfolk, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks lead after day one of the 2006 MEAC Women's Bowling Championship after knocking down a total of 4,498 pins at the AMF Military Lanes in Norfolk, Va.

The Lady Hawks have two bowlers in the top five for the individual results with Jessica Worsely leading the pack with a 950 series score and teammate Sandra Maresca in third place with 916 total pins.

Last year's MEAC champions, Bethune-Cookman are in third place with 4,132 total pins. Delaware State holds down second place (4,173 total pins), while Morgan State is fourth (4,056 total pins) and North Carolina A&T is fifth (3,955 total pins).

The first round of the baker matches were also played today with Howard, the No. 6 seed, beating Norfolk State, the No. 11 seed, 436 total pins to 355 total pins. No. 7 Coppin State defeated No. 10 Hampton 484 total pins to 473 total pins and No. 9 Florida A&M defeated South Carolina State 479 total pins to 401 total pins.

The 2006 MEAC Women's Bowling Championship will conclude on Saturday, March 18, at 12:30 p.m. with the remainder of the double elimination baker matches. Howard, Coppin State and Florida A&M move into the winner's bracket where they join the top five teams from the first day of competition. Norfolk State, Hampton and South Carolina State move into the loser's bracket. UMES, Delaware State, Bethune-Cookman, Morgan State and North Carolina A&T all had byes for the first round of the baker matches.
