HAWK BOWLING STRUGGLES IN OPENING MATCH OF MARCH

March 7, 2006

Bessemer, Ala. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling team has had a solid season this year, moving up in the polls to fifth in the nation. That ranking however, may slide a little after this past weekend when the Hawks bowled well but ran into some stiff competition who matched them frame for frame. UMES totaled only three wins and had six losses in the Holiday Classic this past weekend.

The Hawks dropped a pair of contests early, falling to Vanderbilt (1095-1027) and Nebraska (999-994). Both were solid performances for UMES but in both cases the other team bowled extremely well. The Lady Hawks quickly got on track, knocking off Grambling (941-859) and Southern (1110-936) in back-to-back matches. They would drop the final match of the day to Alabama A & M, 962-908.

On the day UMES had some high individual numbers. In game one against Vanderbilt the Lady Hawks had three bowlers over 200. Laura Zanrucha (216), Megan Raymond (214) and Christine King (244) were all high rollers. Zanrucha had a 204 in game two and Maryetta Lewis tallied a 235 in the same match. In the two wins Sandra Maresca had a 211 and 237 while Lewis had a 245, Jessica Worsley tallied a 233 and Kristie Minnis racked up a 201 and 225.

On day two UMES looked to pick up some more wins but they could only find one, that coming in a 1048-979 defeat of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In that game four of the five Hawk bowlers tallied 200 or better scores. Zanrucha (215), Maresca (202), Worsley (222) and Lewis (223) were all solid.

The Lady Hawks had three losses. Central Missouri State (1026-1007), Arkansas State (1017-954) and defending MEAC Champions Bethune-Cookman (1010-950) all got the better of the Hawks.

In the other three matches, as well as a bye, where a team bowls against no opponent but records a pin fall, UMES put up a lot more 200 plus games. Zanrucha had a 209, Maresca a 221 and 204, Worsley 227 and Lewis who had all 200s on the day with a 215, 228, 213 and 223.

UMES finished eighth in the 17 team field with 9,837 total pins.

Individually the Lady Hawk's highest finisher was Maryetta Lewis who was tenth with 2,148 total pins. Worsley was their second highest finisher in 32nd with 1,941 pins. There were 122 bowlers.

UMES is back in action this weekend, March 11-12, 1006 in East Brunswick, N.J. at the ECAC Championship
