Glassboro, New Jersey — The No. 6 Lady Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team picked up nine wins en route to a second-place finish in the Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) Holiday Classic Dec. 27-29.
UMES amassed a 7-0 record in head to head games and a 2-4 record in Baker format games in the event. They opened with four wins in head to head competition over St. Francis College (1061-665), defending National Champions and the host Knights of FDU (900-852), St. Peter's College (984-823) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (952-919).
The Lady Hawks (47-9) also picked up three more head to head wins on day three with a 984-946 win over Sacred Heart and victories over Morgan State (1021-871) and Coppin State (997-659).
Individually, UMES was led by Marion Singleton. The Freshman Sensation tallied 2,756 pins in the head to head games, individual games and doubles. That pin fall earned her tournament MVP honors. In the team games Singleton tallied six 200 plus games out of just seven attempts. Her games were 244, 195, 222, 230, 234, 227 and 205.
In doubles action Singleton and her teammate, fellow Lady Hawk Michelle Wallace, took first place with 1,356 pins, almost 200 more than the second place team from Adelphi University.
Wallace was also strong in the team games with two 200 games and four in the 190s.
Laura Zanrucha was also impressive in the first four team games tallying a 244, 203 and 206 in three of the games.
Day two of the event saw Baker format games. A format that the Lady Hawks usually excel in was not so kind as they picked just two wins in six games. Four came on day two. UMES opened with a 823-478 win against Cheyney but then dropped three straight to New Jersey City University (NJCU) (931-865), Delaware State (771-749) and Adelphi (704-682).
The Hawks' final two Baker games came in the championship round as they knocked off Sacred Heart (1079-956) in the semi-finals and fell to tournament champion NJCU (576-523) in three games in the Championship round.
The Gothic Knights of NJCU claimed the championship, UMES was second, FDU third, Sacred Heart fourth and Wisconsin-Whitewater rounded out the top five.
UMES now heads to the MEAC round-up in High Point, North Carolina on Jan. 12-13, 2007 to face all southern conference schools.
