APOPKA, Fla. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) shocked the top seeded Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) 4-3 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament this afternoon. With the win UMES guarantees itself a spot in the Final Four and a spot on tomorrow's bowling slate.
In a close match the Hawks picked up wins in the first, second, third and seventh games of the best of seven baker game format. Their game four loss was by just two pins but the Lady Hawks rebounded to win game seven by ten pins, 204-194, coming down to the tenth frame.
The scores were as follows: (289-204, 259-236, 199-206, 201-180, 203-223, 179-181, 204-194)
With the win the Hawks earn a bye into the semi-finals where they await the winner of FDU and Central Missouri, the teams the Hawks have topped in the first two rounds. That match will occur at 5:20 pm tonight. With a win UMES moves into the live television finals on Saturday at 4:00 pm with no losses in the double elimination bracket. If they fall they are still alive, bowling the same team on Saturday at 1:30 pm.
"I am so proud of these young ladies" said Brummell. "We will see who we get next and keep bowling well."
In other news Minnesota State-Mankato was eliminated by Central Missouri, 4-0-1 to finish eighth and New Jersey City was eliminated by Sacred Heart 4-3 to finish seventh.
Vanderbilt topped #2 seed Nebraska 4-2, and like the Hawks, have no losses and await the Nebraska and Sacred Heart winner.
The two quarterfinal matches will happen at 3:30 pm.
