HAMPTON, Va. - The #3 Lady Hawks from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) picked up eight wins to just one loss in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division meet this past weekend, improving their overall record to 59-13 and 24-3 in MEAC play. With the event, the final divisional meet of the season, UMES claims first place in the division, a good place to be for the MEAC Championships, held later this season in March.
The Hawks' lone loss came in the head to head matches to their rival, # 10 Delaware State. DSU has gotten the better of the Hawks three times in MEAC play, accounting for all of their conference losses. UMES has topped DSU three times as well, but only twice in the league schedule. They fell to the Hornets in the second match of the first day, 850-824.
UMES did pick up four wins on the first day, topping Howard (880-801), Hampton (844-750), Morgan State (953-856) and Coppin State (864-629). The lane conditions were tough and Head Coach Sharon Brummell only bowled one of her players in all five games, resulting in some quality lane time for many reserves.
UMES accounted for only three games over 200 with All-American Laura Zanrucha rolling the highest game at 223 while Martha Perez, who did bowl all five games, averaging an 186.2, posted a 206. Both of those 200 games were against Coppin State. Jessica Worsley also posted a plus 200 game with a 203 against Morgan State.
In baker action UMES got revenge on Delaware State with a 767-717 win while also picking up "Ws" against Howard (735-693), Morgan State (727-668) and Hampton (705-688).
"It was a tough meet for us," said Brummell. "However, we got through with eight wins and only one loss so we should be in good shape for MEACs. Now we get ready for this weekend."
UMES is in action this weekend traveling to Bowie State for the Lady Bulldogs Classic.
