HAWKS OPEN MEAC PLAY WITH 7-3 MARK

Nov. 12, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. - After a surprising opening weekend the Lady Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) headed into conference play looking to get back on track. The top-ranked women's bowling team posted a 7-3 record at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division meet. While they bowled much better than the previous weekend, they struggled at times, dropping two matches to no. 9 Delaware State (DSU) and one to Morgan State while picking up seven key MEAC wins.

UMES (13-10) opened the event bowling team games as they dropped an 863-924 loss to the Bears of Morgan State. They quickly rebounded to post three straight wins over Howard, Coppin State and Hampton. They then closed out the day with one of their losses to DSU, this one by just four pins, 897-893.

In those games last season's NTCA Rookie of the Year Kristina Frahm was solid, rolling a high game of a 258 and posting two more over 200 with a 218 and a 221. She averaged a 214.6 over five games.

Also having another outstanding outing were the dynamite duo from Colombia, Martha Perez and Maria Rodriguez. Perez averaged a 204.6 with a high game of a 224 against Howard while Rodriguez averaged 193 in four games, rolling a 215 against the Bison.

The surprise star of the weekend was senior Jennifer Davis who bowled just two team games but posted scores of 200 and 202. Classmates Sara DiScioscia and Jamie Culbreth also bowled better, with DiScioscia rolling a 257 but averaging a 188 while Culbreth had a high of 202 and averaged a 158.

On day two the Hawks bowled Baker games. After her hot day one, Davis teamed with Frahm, DiScioscia, Perez and Rodriguez to top Howard (799-576), Morgan State (806-660), Hampton (822-743) and Coppin State (744-524). Before the Coppin State match UMES again faced Delaware State. DSU won 832-810, thus taking both MEAC matches against UMES this season. The Hawks did top DSU last weekend at the FDU Fright Knight Invite.

The top ranked Hawks now head into another MEAC Northern Division match-up this weekend when they host the teams at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del. on November 15 & 16.
