OMAHA, Neb. - On day two of the 2008 NCAA Women's Bowling Championship the teams face off in a double elimination Baker game format, best four of seven games. Well, why waste extra games when you can win in four? The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) did just that as they send Vanderbilt to the losers' bracket with a 4-0 sweep of the defending national champions.
UMES won 210-195, 209-205, 196-179 and 212-181. Vanderbilt never really got going, leaving open frames in the match and when they did, the Lady Hawks would capitalize throwing several strikes in a row to clinch the win.
The team of Laura Zanrucha, Kristina Frahm, Martha Perez, Maria Rodriguez and Jessica Worsley were solid, leaving few open frames and advancing on to play Arkansas State University (ASU).
"This is my team," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "This is the team we have seen all year, hopefully they will continue bowling like this. I told them, we got our bad day out of the way and seeding wasn't important for our ultimate goal."
ASU topped Sacred Heart University, also 4-0. The two teams meet at 12:20 p.m. (ET) with the winner earning a bye until the second round, played at 6:10 p.m. (ET).
