WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's volleyball team has finally found their rhythm, sweeping competition at the Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Lady Rams Invitational. The Lady Hawks (12-6) routed WSSU for the third time this season winning 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-7).
Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif./S. Joseph) continued to shine for the Lady Hawks, putting down game-highs of 11 kills and five aces. Christina EstebanÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '© (El Paso, Texas/Midland College) finished with a game-high 33 assists and Leah Amundson (Tuscon, Ariz./Arizona Western) had a game-high 12 digs.
The Lady Rams came out ready to play in the first set of the championship match. Neither team led by more than two points. UMES finally pulled ahead after a kill by Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./Albany) put them up 22-19 and two ball handling errors put the them on set point. Ashley Harris kept WSSU alive with a kill, but the set was ended on a service error. The Lady Rams, now 4-11, were the only team to come close to taking a set from UMES, who is on a 23 set win streak.
Harris and Annika Barnwell led the Lady Rams with five kills each. Erica Cole finished with a team high 10 digs and Alexandria Brown had four assists.
UMES' next match will be in Durham, N.C. against North Carolina Central in non-conference play on Sunday, September 28.
