MIDDLETOWN, Del. - The No. 4 University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team again dominated most of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's (MEAC) Northern Division this past weekend at the Mid-Country Lanes in Middletown Del. In fact, they posted wins over all of them, with one exception, the Hornets of Delaware State University (DSU), who picked up two wins over the Hawks to go a perfect 10-0 in the event and overtake UMES for the lead in the conference's northern division.
The Lady Hawks (28-8, 17-3 MEAC) posted and 8-2 mark on the weekend. A pretty good outing, but the two decisions to DSU gives the Hornets a 19-1 mark in conference and a two game lead over UMES for the MEAC title.
The Lady Hawks were without two of their star bowlers this weekend as Maria Rodriguez (Ibague Tolima, Colombia) was qualifying for her country's National Team and Katherine Brown (Level Green, Pa.) is currently out for medical reasons. Nonetheless, the Hawks rolled on and got a great outing from Martha Perez (Bogota, Colombia) who posted a 1002 pin fall and averaged an impressive 200.4 in the team outings.
Stacy Parsons (Delran, N.J.) was also solid, averaging a 194.25 in four games with an impressive high game of 254, the highest of any Hawk on the weekend. Anggie Ramirez (Bogota, Colombia) was also on her game, posting a 184.75 average in four games.
UMES seemed to be on track early, taking out Howard (932-828), Coppin State (878-730), no. 15 Morgan State (986-845) and Hampton (921-795) in consecutive team games. They finished off the opening day against no. 6 DSU and the Hornets just edged the Hawks 917-893. The 24 pins was close but gave UMES the tough loss.
Heading into day two, the format would change and UMES would see Baker style games with a best four out of seven format. The Lady Hawks opened with an easy four game win over Coppin State but ran into a hot Howard squad that pushed UMES all the way to seven games before the Lady Hawks posted a 246-172 win in the final game.
UMES took out the Pirates of Hampton four games to one and then faced DSU again. It was a back and forth match. The Hawks took games one and two but the Hornets got hot and topped UMES in games three and four (226-199 & 241-205). The Hawks responded putting up a solid game of their own with a 233 to DSU's 157. Now up three to two UMES just had to win one of the next two games. It wasn't to be, as the Hornets posted 199-168 and 200-196 wins. Four pins decided the match, again in DSU's favor.
The Hawks closed out the day on a high note, a 4-1 win over Morgan State.
UMES now prepares to host one of the nation's best tournaments, The Eastern Shore Hawk Classic, November 20-22 at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del. Matches start at 11:00 a.m. each day and admission is free.
