UMES TAKES 2nd PLACE AT FDU NEW JERSEY JAMBOREE

HOWELL, New Jersey — Senior All-American Kristina Frahm (Oswego, Ill.) tallied 1,178 pins and averaged a 235.60 to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to a second-place finish at the FDU New Jersey Jamboree this past weekend at Howell Lanes.

The Hawks posted a 9-4 mark in their first tournament of the season to push their record to 11-4 on the young season. UMES opened with Baker games on Friday and posted wins over No. 8 New Jersey City, No. 13 Adelphi, Monmouth and No. 15 St. Francis (N.Y.). They fell to the nation's top ranked team Fairleigh Dickinson University that day by 22 pins, 740-762.

The second day saw UMES post a win over rival, No. 4 Vanderbilt, 951-930 and No. 9 Kutztown, 1083-939. They were upset by No. 10 Sacred Heart 928-956, but rebounded to top Saint Francis (PA) 1001-856 and Long Island 1025-978.

Frahm rolled the high game of the day, a 279 against Vanderbilt, while she posted a 223 against Kutztown, a 267 vs. St. Francis and a 235 in the Long Island win. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason Player of the Year Maria Rodriguez (Ibague Tolima, Colombia) also earned an All-Star nod with a 1,097 pin fall and a 219.4 average. She posted a 268 against Kutztown, a 237 over St. Francis and a 234 against Long Island. Anggie Ramirez (Bogota, Colombia) and Martha Perez (Bogota, Colombia) also posted 200 plus games with Ramirez rolling a 206 vs. Kutztown, a 201 vs. Sacred Heart, and a 204 over Long Island. Perez posted a 209 in the Kutztown win.

UMES took an 8-2 record into the final day, leading the Baker and Team games. The Hawks posted 3,904 pins in the Baker round and 8,892 pins in the team games to earn the top seed in the play-off round.

Matched up with the nation's top team FDU, the Hawks fell to the Knights 4-2 but rebounded to defeat Sam Houston State 4-3. A rematch for the tournament title awaited with the Hawks taking on the Knights, but the result was the same, a loss for UMES, 4-3 to hand UMES a second place finish in their first tournament of the season.

UMES now heads to a MEAC Northern Division match-up in Washington D.C. November 13-14, 2010.
