HAWK TALK - 2/15/10

Feb. 15, 2010

Princess Anne, Md. - Both the men's and women's basketball teams struggled this week. The men, after a convincing victory at North Carolina A&T, dropped their final non-conference game of the season at North Carolina Central and fell at home to Florida A&M. The women, who were eager to get back on the court after a humbling loss at NCAT, saw their date with FAMU postponed due to weather. The Indoor Track team competed in the MEAC Indoor Championships in Landover, Maryland, while the softball team saw their first action of the year at the Tiny Laster Invitational Tournament in Conyers, Georgia cancelled.

Men's Basketball

Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) registered his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team defeated North Carolina A&T, 62-52, Monday night at the Corbett Sports Center.

"The way we played tonight was a great team effort," said Hines. "It feels good to come into someone else's house and beat them, especially on ESPNU."

UMES wasn't able to control the paint as they lost, 73-71, to North Carolina Central University Wednesday night at McDougald-McLendon Gym.

The Hawks were outscored, 36-20, in the paint and also outrebounded, 38-25. The Eagles registered 17 offensive rebounds to UMES' nine.

Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led the Hawks in scoring with 16 points and added in four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. Junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continues his stellar season of dishing out assists as he had seven on the night in addition to 10 points and four steals while Hines led UMES with seven rebounds.

Florida A&M University (FAMU) shot over 60 percent from the floor at times on Saturday, and proved to be too strong as the Hawks fell, 80-71.

Junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, NJ) scored a team high 17 points for the Hawks in defeat. With the loss UMES (7-18, 5-6) falls to below .500 in conference play. "I'm very disappointed with the way our defense played," said UMES head coach Frankie Allen. "We let (FAMU) have whatever shots they wanted, and we were never able to get back in the game as a result."

Women's Basketball

Senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) notched her six double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds but North Carolina A&T's Lamona Smalley was three assists shy of a triple-double as The Lady Aggies topped the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team, 76-46, at the Corbett Sports Center Monday.

Smalley tallied 18 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists to help N.C. A&T stay perfect in MEAC play at 10-0 and improve to 16-7 overall. T'Wuana Cook also had 22 points on 4-of-8 from 3-point range, five boards and four steals.

Indoor Track

Sophomore Cynthia Anais (Paris, France) had another successful day on Saturday as she took her second gold medal of the weekend, this time in the mile, for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. The Lady Hawks were not able to hold onto their first place standing from Friday as they slid two spots to take third with 102 points. Norfolk State jumped ahead immediately on Saturday, sweeping the top four positions in the women's pole vault in the first non-pentathlon event of the day and finished the weekend with a total of 159 points.

Anais, who took first in the 800-meter dash on Friday, finished ahead of the pack in the mile run with a time of 5:03.56. Fellow sophomore Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) earned the silver medal with her finish of 5:04.44. Senior Tamica Thomas (St. Catherine, Jamaica) ran a time of 5:16.38, which was good for sixth overall.

Upcoming Week

Both the men's and women's basketball teams will face Bethune-Cookman University in a double header on Monday night followed by a pair of home games Saturday against Coppin State. The Lady Hawks will host Florida A&M on Wednesday night, which was rescheduled from this past Saturday. The women's bowling team will be back in action at the Morgan State Invitational on Saturday in Baltimore.
