GREENSBORO, N.C. - After a rough opening day, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) redeemed themselves at the 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Championships, securing a place in the semi-finals, setting up a date with upstart South Carolina State for the right to bowl Delaware State in the championship finals.

The Lady Hawks opened the day in Baker play, taking on sixth-seeded Morgan State and rolling to a 4-0 win in the best-of-seven format (202-161, 196-192, 199-197, 192-172). They would then go on to roll past seventh-seeded South Carolina State 4-1 (153-182, 216-169, 214-141, 218-160, 206-192).

With top seed Delaware State also winning their first two matches, the two rivals would meet up for a chance to go straight to the finals. UMES wasn't able to top the Hornets for a second straight day, falling 4-2 (172-209, 190-216, 226-165, 183-201, 195-160, 174-203). UMES got down 2-0 but rebounded with authority, topping DSU by 61 pins. But the Hornets would take game four to go up 3-1. The Hawks got game five by 35 pins but DSU closed out the win in game six with a decisive 29 pin win.

The Hornets defeated Bethune-Cookman and Norfolk State and had tallied just three games over 200, none better than 215 before facing UMES. Just the Hawks' luck, DSU stepped up, posting four games over the two century mark, including a day high of 216.

UMES and DSU's day was done however. The Hornets await the winner of the Hawks and Bulldogs match, scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start tomorrow. SCSU knocked off Morgan State 4-2, coming from a 2-0 hole to win. The scenario is similar to last year when upstart Florida A&M defeated UMES on the final day to earn a right to play for the MEAC crown.

Should UMES defeat South Carolina State they will meet DSU at 11:45 a.m. The match will be televised on ESPNU in a tape-delayed format on March 29 at 6:00 p.m. UMES will have to defeat DSU twice in the double elimination format to win their fifth MEAC title.

The MEAC Bowling Championship wraps up on Sunday, March 21 at 9:30 a.m. at Gate City Lanes in Greensboro, N.C., beginning with the semifinal round and concluding with the championship final. Admission is free and open to the public.
