MILLSBORO, Del. - It was a slow but productive day for the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on the first day of the 2011 Hawk Classic. The nation's number one team couldn't quite find their chemistry in quad-baker games, finishing seventh in total pinfall but posting a solid record of 4-1.
UMES opened with a win over Saint Peter's College 751-679, winning games one, two and four. From there they topped No. 11 Adelphi 742-731, Monmouth 691-666 and finished the day with a win over No. 10 New Jersey City 735-694 despite dropping the final game. Their lone loss on the day came to No. 9 Sacred Heart 774-745.
"We were fortunate to come out with a 4-1 mark," said head coach Sharon Brummell. "We really didn't bowl all that well at times, our baker games just don't flow right now and we are still learning how to bowl together."
For the day UMES tallied 3,664 total pins to sit in seventh place. They are 232 pins out of first place, five pins behind sixth place New Jersey City, 54 out of fifth place Delaware State. Valparaiso, despite posting a 2-3 record sits atop the standings of the Hawk Classic with 3,896 total pins. Vanderbilt is in second 66 pins back and Fairleigh Dickinson is two bins behind them. Central Missouri is in fourth, 146 pins out of first.
Day two of the Hawk Classic begins at 8:30 a.m. with practice at Millsboro Lanes.
