TAYLOR, Mich. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) came out on fire to start the afternoon session of day two, topping Kutztown University and eliminating them from the NCAA Championships, 4-2. They now take on Fairleigh Dickinson University at 5:20 p.m.
UMES is the only team to beat FDU so far in the tournament.
The Lady Hawks started off strong, posting a 237-22 win in game one. They left no opens and rolled six strikes along the way. The game was tight but KU left and eight-split in the seventh that spelled the loss for the Golden Bears.
The Hawks again were clean in the second game but a string of four strikes to start the match and to end the match spelled doom for UMES as the Hawks fell 227-197.
In game three UMES was dominant. They threw four strikes over the fourth through seventh frames, including one by Pauls Vilas in the sixth that saw the ten pin fall by a downed rolling pin. The Hawks took the match 246-204 by a solid 42 pins.
Game four was another solid outing from the Hawks. Again going clean throughout the game they tallied six strikes. Kutztown was good as well but one open frame spelled their demise in that game, another split eight in the seventh frame, just like the first game. This time UMES took the win 228-217, by 11 pins.
In game five it was splits that bothered the Hawks. They were clean through eight in a tightly contested game but Kristina Frahm left a seven-ten split in the ninth that allowed KU to pull away. It was contagious as Maria Rodriguez left an open in the tenth on a split-five and the Hawks fell 226-200.
Up 3-2 UMES had had enough and opened the game with six strikes in the first seven frames. The eighth saw another seven split, this one from Anggie Ramirez but a pair of spares to close out secured the win. KU had opened earlier in the fourth frame and couldn't overcome the lead UMES built with the opening five strikes.
If the Hawks can top FDU they will bowl them again tomorrow at 10:40 a.m. The winner of that match would be in the finals.
