Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Before the Thanksgiving break, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team soared to victory as they defeated Cheyney (Pa.), 63-38, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Maryland Eastern Shore picked up their first victory on the season and snapped a five-game skid, dating back to last season.

With the victory, the Lady Hawks improved to 1-4 on the season while Cheyney fell to 1-3 overall.

UMES was aggressive on both ends of the court. For the second consecutive game, the Lady Hawks outrebounded their opponent, 60-35. Defensively, Maryland Eastern Shore held the Lady Wolves to 28-percent shooting (16-of-57), including 15-percent from beyond the arc (3-of-20). Despite the tough shooting night, the Lady Hawks constantly attacked the rim as they shot nearly 79-percent (22-of-28) from the foul line.

All eleven Lady Hawks scored in the game, led by Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) notching her third double-double on the season, 11 points and 11 boards. Senior guard Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) had a game-high 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals in the win.

After taking a halftime lead, 27-16, the Lady Wolves' TaKayla Ellis nailed a jumper to cut the deficit to single-digits, 27-18. UMES responded with a quick 6-0 burst to balloon the lead back to double-digits, 33-18. With less than 14 minutes to go in the contest, Cheyney fought back and trimmed the deficit, 37-27, but the Lady Hawks would clamp down on defense. Maryland Eastern Shore's suffocating defense held the Lady Wolves in check as they did not score within the next six minutes. On the other hand, the Lady Hawks went on a 16-0 run to take a commanding lead, 53-27. Cheyney continued to battle until the final buzzer, but UMES was the better team on this night as the Lady Hawks won, 63-38.

Other notable Hawk performances included Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) tallying nine points and five boards while New Jersey-product Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick) added seven points and a season-high nine rebounds in the win.

Furthermore, senior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) reached another milestone as she surpassed Rachel Goodwin (2003-06) on the UMES all-time assist leaders. The Fort Washington-native owns the ninth spot with 210 career dimes. Long ended her night with eight points, seven steals, and three boards.

Early in the game, there were eight lead changes and two ties. Cheyney's Lila Jones gave the Lady Wolves a 12-11 advantage, but UMES turned up the intensity. Over a seven-minute span, the Lady Hawks held Cheyney scoreless; thus, going on an 11-0 run to push their lead to double-digits, 22-11. Both clubs went even down the stretch, 5-5, as the Lady Hawks took a halftime lead, 27-16.

For the Lady Wolves, Jones had a team-high 12 points while shooting 50-percent from the field (4-of-8). Ellis posted seven points and a team-high eight rebounds in a losing effort.

Maryland Eastern Shore looks to make it two-in-a-row as they continue their home stand next Wednesday (12/03). UMES hosts in-state rival Mount St. Mary's. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
