LADY HAWKS COME UP SHORT AGAINST SOUTH CAROLINA STATE

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In their closest game of the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team came up short as they fell to the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs, 64-59, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 6-9 (3-2 MEAC) on the season whereas South Carolina State moved to 10-7 (3-3 MEAC) overall.

UMES held the lead for more than 21 minutes in the contest while shooting over 44-percent (23-of-52) from the field. Furthermore, the Lady Hawks outrebounded South Carolina State, 41-35. Maryland Eastern Shore was led by newcomers Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) and Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.). Subritzky had a team-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 50-percent (3-of-6) from beyond the arc. Bryant had another solid outing as she was a board shy from her first career double-double. The New York-native ended her night registering 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds in the loss.

After taking a slim halftime lead, 33-31, the Lady Hawks extended the lead with consecutive freebies from Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.), 40-34. South Carolina State's Jazzmine Johnson nailed a long ball to cut the deficit in half, 40-37, and the Lady Bulldogs tied the game at the 9:04 mark, 46-46. For the next seven minutes, the contest saw four lead changes and four ties. With two minutes remaining, the game was deadlocked, 57-57, until Long's layup gave UMES the advantage, 59-57. The Lady Bulldogs battled back as they closed out the contest on a 7-0 run to win, 64-59.

Other notable Hawk performance included Long recording 12 points and four dimes. Long also made history as she moved to seventh on the all-time assist leaders in the program's history, surpassing UMES Hall of Famer Monica Felder.

The first period was a seesaw battle as there were 12 ties and eight lead changes. In the waning minutes before intermission, the Lady Bulldogs' Jasmine Coleman made her second layup in the last two minutes to tie the game, 31-31. Moments later, Subrtizky answered with an easy layup to give the Lady Hawks a halftime lead, 33-31.

For the Lady Bulldogs, Amber Howard was the lone player to reach double-figures. Howard finished with 17 points on 5-of-10 from downtown.

On Jan. 24, the Lady Hawks travel south to Daytona Beach, Fla. to face the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats inside Moore Gymnasium. Game-time is slate for 2 p.m.
