North Brunswick, N.J. - A day after the heroics of a perfect game and a rare split conversion, what kind of treats would the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) have in store on day two? The Hawks would post a 3-2 record, but more importantly climb up the standings behind a strong tenth game to secure a sixth place standing and lock themselves into the final championship bracket spot.
UMES opened the day with 1,003-864 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) and maintained their seventh place standing from day one. Next up, the Hawks would drop a close contest to rival Vanderbilt, 1,047-994 but the pinfall was enough to float the Hawks up to sixth-place overall, a spot they wanted to make sure they stayed in or above.
UMES struggled in game three, tallying just 841 pins. Luckily, their opponent, Caldwell, managed just 809 pins, treating the Hawks to another win. UMES barely hung on to sixth place but the championship round spot was still in play.
Round four on the day was the Hawks match-up with Wisconsin-Whitewater. The WarHawks got the better of UMES by just two pins. UMES's 934-932 loss meant that they dropped all the way to eighth place. They would need to scare up a serious pinfall in the tenth and final match against Long Island University (LIU).
The Hawks saved the best for last and dressed up their highest match of the day, scaring the pins to the tune of a 1,045, getting the win over LIU-Brooklyn, who posted an 851. The highest tally of the round flew the Hawks back to sixth place and gave them a shot on Sunday at the tournament title.
Thashaina Seraus (Oranjestad, Aruba) led the charge for the Hawks, posting games of 234, 200 and 235 along the way to averaging 207.2 for the event and finishing in 12th place overall. Fellow returner Melanie Copey (Ontario, N.Y.), coming off her perfect game on Friday, tossed a pair of games over 200 with a 211 & 212 and wound up finishing 17th with a 204.5 average for the two days.
Freshmen Haley Cummings (Huber Heights, Ohio) and Danielle August (Mililani, Hawaii) both etched top 50 finishes in 47th and 48th place averaging 190.3 and 190 respectively.
UMES will take their solid season opening outing into tomorrow's bracket play finals. Arkansas State and Fairleigh Dickinson secured the top two seeds respectively and with them, byes in the bracket round. The Hawks will take on rival Vanderbilt, the third-seed, at nine in the morning. The winner will get FDU in the second round, while the loser will face the loser of Sam Houston State and Delaware State for fifth place.
