TOWSON, Md. - While the Hawks seem to have little trouble in team games, Baker games have been a struggle on the young season with a young team. Today that was evident, as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) went 2-2 on the final day of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division meet, falling to 6-2 in league play early in the year.

"For a young team, we have really good chemistry," said head coach Kayla Bandy. "But we have to make spares and grow up bowling wise."

The spare making hurt the Hawks early as they fell to Morgan State (933-898) and Delaware State (1012-921) to open the day. UMES would rebound to top Coppin State (955-629) and Howard (1067-925). The Hawks got better each game, but started to slow early. Their 1,067 was the also the highest game shot on the day of the entire meet. The matches were all five-game Baker format contests.

Bandy shuffled her Baker lineup three times to try and get it right. The two wins saw the coach settling on the lineup of Haley Cummings (Huber Heights, Ohio), Jacqueline Rhoda (Portage, Ind.), Melanie Copey (Ontario, N.Y.), Danielle August (Miliani, Hawaii) and Thashaina Seraus (Oranjestad, Aruba).

"We have to learn to bowl Bakers," said Bandy. "Our team game numbers are solid, we just have to apply that to the Baker format."

With the tough start on day two the Hawks fell into second place in the MEAC North with a 6-2 mark, while Delaware State took the top spot at 7-1. They outscored UMES on the weekend by 52 pins, 7880-7828. Howard stands in third in pinfall but fourth overall at 3-5 while Morgan State is 4-4 in league play and in third place.

The Hawks now host their first tournament of the year, the Hawk Classic, sponsored by The Hyatt Place Dewey Beach, November 20-22 in Millsboro, Del. at Millsboro Lanes. The event will feature 20 teams, including many nationally ranked schools.
