HAWKS HEART BROKEN

Feb. 14, 2015

HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's bowling team had probably the worst day on the lanes they have had in over a decade as they failed to post a single win today at the SFA Jacks Invitational. The team, while amassing a respectable pinfall, finished the day in seventh place overall but posted a 0-6 record, with five of those losses coming against top-six teams in the nation.

The losses were just another example of the state of Texas two-stepping on the Hawk's heart. Two weeks prior the team struggled at the Prairie View A&M Invitational to a seventh place finish. Valentine's Day was not any kinder to UMES.

The last time the Hawks finished a day without a win was in January of 2011 when UMES went 0-3 on the final day of the Mid-Winter Classic.

While the wins didn't come, junior newcomer Thashaina Seraus (Oranjestad, Aruba) was dialed in. Rolling games of 258, 201, 263, 212, 256 and 245. The 1,435 pinfall was the best in the lineup for the Hawks and the best in the 121-woman field. She averaged an amazing 239.17, more than 17 pins in average above the second-place finisher, Robyn Renslow of Vanderbilt.

All-American Mariana Alvarado (Leon, Mexico) was also solid on the day. Finishing in 27th overall, Alvarado averaged a 201, tallying a pin fall of 1,206. She posted three of her six games over 200 with a 220, 223, and a 225. She had solid games of 184 and 192 along the way, with her only out of character game being a 162 in the final match of the day.

They were the only pair of Hawks to average better than 200 and bowl all six matches.

UMES opened the day taking on No. 4 Central Missouri in a position round match. Seraus carried the Hawks with a 258 while Alvarado had a 184 and Victoria Jones (Baltimore, Md.) added a 181. The team combined for just a 963 while the Jennies tossed a 1017.

It wouldn't get any easier.

The Hawks next faced No. 1 Nebraska. So far this season UMES hadn't lost to the nation's top team, sporting a 2-0 record. Today, however, the Huskers would get the better of the Hawks. Nebraska took a 991-943 win. Not breaking 1,000 would have allowed UMES to make it 3-0, but it wasn't to be. Alvarado tossed a 220 and Seraus a 201 while Jones added a 193. Unfortunately, the other pair of Hawks rolled in the 160s, allowing for the Huskers to get the win.

The murder's row continued with the host Jacks of SFA. UMES got it together, seeing a 263 from Seraus, a 223 form Alvarado and a 216 from Tatiana Munoz (Ibague Tolima, Colombia). Even Valerie Riggin (Vista, Calif.) added a 195, but the last score was in the 160s and Stephen F. Austin was on as well and they tallied a 1092. UMES' 1060 was 32 pins short and it meant another loss.

Next up was No. 6 Vanderbilt. The Hawks' long-time rival only tallied a 938, but UMES was all kinds of off, getting only Searus above 200 with a 212 and a pair in the 190s. Tragedy struck in one spot as Riggin started and Jones finished but neither found the mark, finishing with just a 133. Even a 170 would have helped the Hawks win, but again it turned into another loss.

Up next, was Central Missouri again. UMES came out firing to post a 1045. Four games were over 200, but the freshman Melanie Copey (Ontario, N.Y.) managed just a 146. Her teammates had picked up the slack, but the Jennies had none, tallying an 1135 and denying UMES another win.

The final match of the day was in inter-pool position round match vs Long Island University. The 15th ranked Blackbirds were still bowling well, tossing a 1062. UMES posted a 967, getting just one 200 plus game with a 245 from Seraus. Alvarado's 162 was the low game and despite a 198 from Munoz, and 180 plus games from Jones and Riggin, it again just wasn't enough.

All of that equaled an 0-6 day.

The pinfall wasn't bad in total, the Hawks dropped from fifth-place overall to seventh. They posted the ninth-highest tally of the day, a little over 100 pins difference from what top-seeded Nebraska rolled. For the two days the Hawks still averaged just a pin shy of 200, just a one-pin difference from the sixth-seed Vanderbilt.

Behind the Hawks were Wisconsin-Whitewater in eighth, St. Francis-Brooklyn in ninth and Sacred Heart in tenth. The standings will set-up a match on Sunday morning with the WarHawks to try and advance to finish in fifth place.

Nebraska, SFA, Long Island, Sam Houston State and Central Missouri rounded out the top five teams. The first four will have a chance to claim the first ever SFA Jacks Championship when action starts on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. Central time.
