Bowling goes to Kutztown with History on its side

Jan. 21, 2016

READING, Pa. - After a tough weekend at the Mid-Winter Invitational in Arkansas, the Hawks bowling team heads to the Kutztown Invitational in what serves as a perfect opportunity to rebound. That's because history has been kind to the team here, with past teams winning numerous tournaments and a pair of 300 matches listed among the individual achievements.

The event begins Friday and will last thru Sunday. Games will start around mid-morning beginning with six Baker games on Friday, then six individual games on Saturday and best-of-seven Baker bracket play on Sunday. The Hawks will provide streaming via the UMES Bowling channel on The Cube.

Known for having a large field of teams, this year's Kutztown tournament will be no different. Representatives other than the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) include #2 Fairleigh Dickinson, #3 Vanderbilt, #7 Wisconsin-Whitewater, #8 Stephen F. Austin, and #9 Central Missouri, among others. McKendree University, the #6 team in the country and last week's Mid-Winter Invitational champion will also make an appearance.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will also have representation from #10 Delaware State, #11 North Carolina A&T, Coppin State, Morgan State, Norfolk State, Hampton and Howard.

Past years at the annual Reading tournament has been kind to the Hawks. UMES has won four titles at this event, including three in a row from 2012-2014. Last season, the team placed third, but combined for a 300 Baker game on Sunday, one of two perfectos they have achieved at Kutztown. Additionally, Paula Vilas bowled what was the only individual perfect game in team history here, until current sophomore Melanie Copey (Ontario, N.Y.) pulled out the feat at the New Jersey Jamboree.

Inclement weather may have an impact on this weekend's proceedings. The Hawks' website, umeshawks.com will provide further updates on delays. Recaps will also be provided throughout the weekend.
