Nov. 22, 2016 MILLSBORO, Delaware - The Maryland Eastern Shore bowling team went 1-2 on the final day of competition, dropping close Baker matches to Sam Houston (4-3) and Monmouth (4-3) before topping Stephen F. Austin (4-3) to finish in this place after a strong three days.
"We had a great weekend," said Bandy. "We played well as a team, chemistry was good, we earned our second seed and on Sunday after some setbacks we rallied to defeat a good team in Stephen F. Austin and claim a top three finish."
Following a career-day on Saturday, graduate student Thashaina Seraus (Oranjestad, Aruba) continued to lead the Shore through Sunday's 21 Baker matches.
"Thashaina was great all weekend, she led the field in total pinfall and really carried us. She had a single pin spare miss on Sunday that she really took to heart, but I told her not to worry about it, she makes that 99 of a 100 times. She rebounded, had the same single pin to start the next game and made it, she got right back on the lanes and led us to a win."
The entire Hawks squad contributed to the weekend performance with freshmen Cayla Hicks (Richmond, Virginia) and Brigitte Jacobs (Freeport, Illinois) continue their growth along with first-year player Alexandra Hernandez (Maracaibo, Venezuela).
"Our freshman bowlers really contributed and our veterans like Jacqueline Rhoda (Portage, Indiana) and Melanie Copey (Ontario, New York) stepped up," Bandy said. "They have me excited for where this program can go."
Sam Houston won the Classic with Monmouth coming in second.
"This was another great field, with some central teams like Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Central Missouri, UAB and Tulane, and strong regional teams like Monmouth, Adelphi, Sacred Heart and Long Island. Everyone enjoyed their experience and the staff at Millsboro Lanes was as awesome as ever. We can't thank them enough and look forward to the 13th annual event next year."
The Hawks (10-4) will return to action on Dec. 3-4 when they host the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Meet No. 2 at Eastern Shore Lanes in Pocomoke City, Maryland.
