April 14, 2017 BATON ROUGE, Louisiana - Things didn't go according to planned for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday at the NCAA Bowling Championships.
The Hawks (85-44) had a hard time figuring out how to attack the lanes at the Raising Cane's River Center and dropped all five of Thursday's traditional matches in the qualifying round.
"The main thing I can really say is that if we were going to have a day like today, I'm glad it came in qualifying," head coach Kayla Bandy said. "We'll get together as a team, regroup and come back ready to turn things around tomorrow."
The Shore will play its final two seeding games on Friday against Stephen F. Austin and Arkansas State beginning at 11:50 eastern. Bracket play will then start at 4 p.m. eastern time after the lanes are conditioned.
The Hawks opened the day with a 914-875 loss to Nebraska. They dropped the next game 1,137-893 to Vanderbilt and then a 1,047-915 loss to McKendree followed. The day ended with a 962-926 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson and another tough 973-902 loss to Sam Houston State.
The matches are being live streamed on the NCAA website at http://www.ncaa.com/liveschedule/2017/04/14
Eastern Shore hasn't been to the NCAA Championships since 2014, when it finished third behind San Houston State and Nebraska.
The Hawks have won the NCAA Championship three times: 2008, 2011 and 2012. The program also boasts two USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships: 2011 and 2013.
The last time the team competed in a national championship was last season, when it finished third at the USBC Championship. All but three members of this year's squad competed in that event.
The NCAA Championship final will air live on ESPNU April 15 at 6:30 p.m.
