ROCKAWAY, New Jersey — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore had a stronger performance on the second day of the Caldwell University Cougar Classic, but still fell to second place after dropping just one of five matches on Oct. 27.
The Hawks (8-2) opened the day by falling in a close match to Kutztown (934-902), but followed that up with wins against Sacred Heart (991-988) and Caldwell (954-903). The squad finished that day with a 929-881 win against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Delaware State and 980-771 win again Bloomfield University.
"Much better bowling today," head coach
Kayla Bandy said. "We had to move the lineup around to keep the energy at the top of the lineup. Today we averaged seven pins higher than we did on Friday.
"That's progress."
The Shore saw sophomore (
Paulina Torres, Ponce, Puerto Rico) rebound from an opening game 170, to finish in third individually with a 194.6 average over five. She had a high game of 216 in back-to-back matches against Sacred Heart and Caldwell.
"Paulina had a rough start getting the ball consistently toward her target, but rallied back quickly as she and
Alexandra Hernandez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) settled in together at the bottom of the lineup."
Hernandez averaged a 186.5 over four games with a high of 203 versus Caldwell.
Junior
Brigitte Jacobs (Freeport, Illinois) averaged a 183.4 over five games to finish in 11
th place individually. She bowled a 168 in the opening match loss, but never fell below 180 the rest of the day.
Senior
Danielle August (Mililani Hawaii) opened they day with 220, 205 and 201 before faltering in game four and averaging a 196.25 over four matches.
"Brigitte and Danielle did an excellent job leading the team through four matches," Bandy said. "We needed a leader to step up and together they did a great job."
But as August faltered against Delaware State
Quianna Macares (Willemstad, Curacao) finished out the ninth and 10
th frames with spare, strike, spare. She then went on to roll a 232 in the final match.
"Quianna had a tough start (with a 161 to open the day), but came back in right when we needed her, helping us to a win against DSU," Bandy said.
Bandy said that junior
Cayla Hicks (Salem, Virginia) had a solid day on the lanes with a four-game average of 197.25 and that she missed much of the third game to give freshman
Isabel Hughes (Raleigh, North Carolina) a go at the lanes.
St. Francis University (Pa.) holds first place with an 9-1 record heading into the final traditional match. Seedings for bracket play are determined by overall record rather than total pin fall.
The Hawks will finish traditional play with a match against Fairleigh Dickinson early in the morning Oct. 28 and then head into bracket play.
