GLEN BURNIE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore finished off three days of Mid-Eastern Athletic conference competition without a single blemish, winning the first MEAC meet of the season with a 12-0 record.
The Hawks (33-4) pushed their match winning streak to 23 with the perfect weekend, while the senior duo of
Brigitte Jacobs (Freeport, Illinois) and
Cayla Hicks (Salem, Virginia) grabbed all-tournament honors at the event. Jacobs was the MVP.
Eastern Shore finished out qualifying Sunday (Nov. 10) morning with a win against Morgan State (956-831) and then went on to win bracket matches against Monmouth (4-0) and Delaware State (4-2).
"It was a great weekend," coach
Kayla Bandy said. "Ladies filled frames and worked together as one."
Jacobs put together yet another strong weekend averaging 221.67 over six Traditional games, but also had a 54% strike rate, converted 96% of her single-pin spares and posted an 89% fill rate.
Hicks averaged 204 over six Traditional games, had a 90% fill rate, picked up 92% of her single-pin spares, filled 90% of her frames and picked up nine-or-better on the first ball 90% of the time.
Freshman
Brooke Roberts (Port Orange, Florida) had her best weekend of the season putting up a strong Traditional average of 211.8 in five traditional games. She had a 54% strike rate, converted 94% of her single-pin spares, filled at a 87% rate and picked up nine-or-better on the first ball 81% of the time.
Classmate
Morgan Cooper (Gloucester Point, Virginia) filled 93% of her frames.
"Brigitte bowled awesome and Brooke inserted herself into the lineup nicely this weekend. Really the whole team did great!" Bandy said. "Whenever you have four student athletes hanging out around the 90% fill rate good things are going to happen — Morgan, Cayla, Brigitte and Brooke were all right there."
Sophomore
Chloe Skurzynski (Carlisle, Pennsylvania) put up a 212.4 average over five traditional games and had a 46% strike rate for the event.
"While we went 12-0 and bowled the best we have all season, what the scores don't show is that we missed single pins and had to make substitutions when ball motion wasn't what it should be and shot making failed us," Bandy said. "At all times three girls worked incredibly hard on the bench making sure they were warm when they were needed and at keeping the team motivated for every frame. We faced adversity and it was awesome to see the girls respond.
"I'm super proud of the result but even more proud of how we handled the process, the stuff the score doesn't show."
The Shore returns to action Nov. 15-17 at SMF All-Star Lanes in Greensboro, North Carolina.
