GREENSBORO, North Carolina — What a difference a day makes.
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore struggled on the first day of competition at the second and final Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference meet of the season on Saturday (Feb. 23), but on Sunday the Hawks found their way.
The Shore (57-35, 13-5 MEAC) rolled through Baker competition topping North Carolina A&T State 964-939 to open the day and then following that up with a 1,012-877 win against Florida A&M. After a high-scoring bye of 1,005, Eastern Shore pushed on to wins against Delaware State (956-930) and Morgan State (993-905).
Over the five Baker matches, the Hawks averaged a 197.2 — a transformative score for their standing in the event and the conference — winning the regular season.
Sunday's performance pushed the two-day average to 189.0 for the event.
Since the MEAC regular season champion — and the No. 1 seed for the MEAC Championship March 22-24 — was to be decided by total pinfall of the two meets, Sunday's output was even more key. After the first meet the team stood at 178.56 and was in third place.
The Hawks finished MEAC competition with a total pinfall of 17,485 in 95 games for an average of 184.05.
Sunday's total was enough to bring The Shore past defending MEAC Champion North Carolina A&T State by 55 pins. The Aggies averaged 183.47 and will be the No. 2 seed at this year's championship, followed by No. 3 Delaware State, No. 4 University of Alabama-Birmingham, No. 5 Monmouth and No. 6 Howard.
