Tough weekend continues for Hawks on Day 2 of first MEAC meet

The Shore now 17-17 overall to start the season

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — Sometimes the best part about something is that it's over.

That was the case for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore bowling squad when it came to the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference meet of the season in Glen Burnie, Maryland over the weekend.

The Hawks (17-17, 3-5 MEAC) had another rough day on Sunday splitting four matches with wins coming against Howard and Coppin State.

"I guess it was better than yesterday," Hawks coach Roger Petrin said. "It was just an odd weekend where every time we got something going an untimely split would occur or a machine breakdown would occur — although everyone was dealing with the last part. Elizabeth Ross (Schenectady, New York) said to me after the final frame: 'It's never been such a relief to finish the day out and be done.' That's the kind of weekend it was."

In the opening match of the day against the Eagles, The Shore trailed by 48 pins going into the last of five Baker games and put up a 239 to win by a 920-913 score.

But frustration followed in the next match with University of Alabama-Birmingham as the team struggled to an 893-853 loss despite holding a three-point lead heading into the final game.

The next match against Delaware State was a 1,024-1,017 loss despite a late run by the Hawks to make it close.

"I thought they responded well (to heading into the day in a 1-3 hole)," Petrin said. "We made some good shots and it was better than yesterday. We just didn't have the right shapes through the pins."

The team will next be in action when they host the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic Nov. 19-21 at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Delaware.

"I think we are going to put an asterisk next to this one and just move on," Petrin said. "We are going to trust the process that we have created. Every team is going to have this type of weekend. We just have to get back at it and the girls have a day off tomorrow except for conditioning. It is going to be about resting and getting their minds right and letting this weekend go. After a full 24 hours to rest and regroup, we'll get back on the lanes on Tuesday to get ready for the weekend."
