Day 1 Team Results
MILLSBORO, Delaware — Host University of Maryland Eastern Shore finished the opening day of the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic with a 3-2 record, but stood in 10
th place in total pinfall after five team Baker games on Friday (Nov. 19).
"I think we started very slow, then it got better, but I don't think we ever recovered from the first match," graduate student
Paulina Torres said. "Then in the last match I don't know what happened. We can get together tonight and figure out what we are going to do tomorrow. We didn't make shots and we had a lot of splits early. If we can figure that out, we'll be good tomorrow."
Eastern Shore (20-19, 3-5 MEAC) opened with a tough 1082-838 loss to National Tenpin Coaches Association No. 8 Fairleigh Dickinson, but recovered to win the next match 995-746 against No. 13 Mount St. Mary's.
Head coach
Roger Petrin said that
Alejandra Amezcua (Baja California, Mexico) struggled early, but ended up finding one of the best lines of the day.
Elizabeth Ross (Schenectady, New York) had some strong matches as well, but nothing came easy for the No. 20 Hawks. They split seven times in the first two games alone.
"
Brooke Driver (Woodbridge, Virginia), I felt like, started strong and in our first match if she didn't bowl well we would have had 760," Petrin said. "She was one of the few who I thought actually had a good look in our first match.
Gabriella Ochoa Hubbard (Nogales, Sonora, Mexico) had a rough time last week and she worked hard this week and really turned it around."
The third match was a grinder as the Hawks faltered late against No. 25 Adelphi, but ended up tying 984-984 and taking the tiebreak 93-92.
The Shore edged No. 12 Sacred Heart 971-967 in the third match of the day, but then suffered a difficult 963-903 setback to No. 11 Duquesne.
"Alejandra had a really good look at one point and also
Brooke Driver started really good," Torres said. "Liz and Gabby bowled well at times too, it just seemed like we all had good lines, but struggled at different times," Torres said. "I struggled at the beginning and then did better, but we didn't get it together. There wasn't one match where we were all in a good line. There was always something missing. That's something we can figure out for tomorrow."
The Hawks will open Saturday's Traditional play with a 10 a.m. matchup with No. 7 St. Francis. Competition is open to the public and is being broadcast live on BowlTV.com.
