Hawks go 4-1 in Traditional play and move into sixth place

Three from The Shore average more than 200 on the day

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore went 4-1 on the second day of competition on Saturday (Nov. 6) at the Track Kat Klash hosted by Sam Houston State. The Hawks (13-10) picked up victories against Central Missouri, Valparaiso, Delaware State and Prairie View A&M and moved up one spot to sixth place headed into bracket play on Sunday.

"The scores say we bowled better today," head coach Roger Petrin said. "It was only 11 pins better. I would actually say that we bowled better yesterday minus the one set, but I think the whole field probably feels that way too. I think we are one of the few teams that scored better than we did the day before."

The victory against the National Tenpin Coaches Association No. 17 Jennies by a 951-830 score started off the day for Eastern Shore and the second match of the day was a tough 1,060-928 setback to host and No. 6 Sam Houston State.

"I feel like we had a lot more out there and yet we still went 4-1 today," Petrin said. "It was one of those weird things where we didn't really have a bad set, but we didn't really pop up anything big either, which kept us from making any big moves on the day. We were able to move up a spot, but we were hoping for a little bit more."

In the third match of the day, the Hawks topped No. 14 and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rival Delaware State 991-924.

"Any time you can get a win its good regardless of who it is it feels good," Petrin said. "I know they probably wanted to beat us as bad as we wanted to beat them Its part of bowling in the conference, but I'm always rooting for our MEAC teams to do well because I want our conference to be recognized as great."

Junior Brooke Roberts (Port Orange, Florida) had the top day for the Hawks averaging 203.6 over five Traditional games. Classmate Alejandra Amezcua (Baja California, Mexico) was right being with a 203.0 average.

"It was still pretty evident today that Alejandra has the best look on our team, but the lanes played different today," Petrin said. "It played a lot flatter. There was not as much hold to the left and there was not as much hook to the right. She threw a lot of good shots that would have struck yesterday that didn't strike today."

The final match of the day saw The Shore top No. 22 Prairie View A&M 987-937.

Graduate Student Paulina Torres (Ponce, Puerto Rico) averaged 202.0 over five games as well for The Shore.

"Paulina popped off a big 260 in the last game and that was huge because Prairie View was throwing a pretty decent score together and it was pretty tight all the way until the ninth and 10th frame," Petrin said. "It gives her a little more  confidence in her game I'm sure. I know she was pretty pleased with how she bowled today and she was very close to having a really big day. Her first four game scores may not show it, but she was close to throwing a pretty massive block together. The pieces just didn't fall into place."

Bracket play will begin at 9:20 a.m. eastern time on Sunday as the squad returns to Bake competition.

"I think we have a clear picture of what we want to accomplish and I think we know what we need to do to get there and we have to go do it," Petrin said.

"This morning I think we missed quite a few single pins. We only shot 72 percent on single pin spares. There is definitely a lot of room for growth here. In our first match, we had six single pins missed by the sixth frame."

Eastern Shore begins the day against No. 15 Maryville, which it fell to on the opening day of competition.

"I think we have an opportunity to make a move her tomorrow," Petrin said. "We have Maryville to start and that's our main focus in seeing if we can get a couple breaks and a couple good wins to get to third place on the final day."
