PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore went undefeated on the second day of competition at the Stormin' Blue & White Vegas Open on Sunday (Jan. 9) as three Hawks finished in the Top 20 individually.
Eastern Shore (32-25, 3-5 MEAC) will head into Monday's bracket play in seventh place overall based on pinfall, while junior Brooke Roberts (Port Orange, Florida) finished in ninth place after averaging 211.00 over five Baker games.
"Today was a good day," Hawks coach Roger Petrin said. "Though we dropped in the standings, we won every match. We are seeing the lanes the right way, just needed to complete our games in order to stay/move up in the standings. Tomorrow, we are looking to continue our streak and see how much we can move up."
The Shore opened the day with a 1,022-959 win against National Tenpin Coaches Association No. 9 Mount St. Mary's and then beat No. 25 Monmouth (958-880). The No. 18 Hawks closed out the day with wins against Texas Southern (1,064-966), Spalding University (916-811) and No. 13 Tulane (965-898).
Graduate student Paulina Torres (Ponce, Puerto Rico) and junior Elizabeth Ross (Schenectady, New York) finished tied for 15th individually with a five-game average of 203.80.
Gabriella Ochoa Hubbard (Nogales, Sonora, Mexico), a sophomore, averaged 183.40 over five Baker contests, while junior Alejandra Amezcua (Baja California, Mexico)put up a 183.00. Each saw their averaged torpedoed by just one rough game.
The Hawks will begin bracket play on Monday at 11 a.m. eastern time.
