The Shore returns to action with two wins in Vegas

Hawks pick up pair on Day 1 after winter break

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore bowling squad returned to action on Saturday (Jan. 8) at the Stormin' Blue & White Vegas Classic finishing the opening day of competition with a 2-3 record and standing in sixth place.

The Hawks (27-25, 3-5 MEAC) picked up wins against National Tenpin Coaches Association No. 10 Stephen F. Austin and Grambling State.

"It was a good day, but we had a lot of highs and lows," Hawks coach Roger Petrin said. "When the team was on, everybody was clicking. When we were not, everybody was struggling. We need to see the lanes and transition faster and make adjustments quicker. Our picture was wrong on those pairs we played on when we struggled. Some pairs are just very different and we need to make changes quicker."

No. 18 Eastern Shore opened the day with a 1,067-980 loss to No. 2 McKendree and then fell to Prairie View A&M 938-872.

The victory against the Ladyjacks came in the third match (1,114-993) as the Hawks posted their best score of the day. They followed that up with a 1,067-659 victory against the Tigers.

It was rough going against No. 10 Maryville in the last match of the opening day as The Shore fell 1,108-888.

On Sunday, Eastern Shore will look to capitalize on what they did well in the first day back to action during five Traditional matches beginning at 12:55 p.m. eastern time.

The Hawks will open with No. 9 Mount St. Mary's and then face No. 25 Monmouth, Texas Southern, Spalding and No. 13 Tulane.

The event is being streamed live on Flobowling.
