Hawks finish sixth at Track Kat Klash

Ross makes 2nd all-tournament team of season

HOUSTON, Texas — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore went 1-2 in Baker bracket play on the final day of the Track Kat Klash and finished the event in sixth place.

The team opened the day with a 4-0 loss to Mid-Eastern Athletic conference rival and National Tenpin Coaches Association No. 12 Delaware State.

"It turns out that this is not going to be our best performance of the year, but it's a sixth place finish," head coach Roger Petrin said. "The takeaway is that we didn't bowl anywhere near our best capacity and that was based on poor spare shooting. If we make our spares, we are going to be right in the hunt of a majority of our events moving forward because we are striking."

UMES (19-5) rebounded from the setback to outlast No. 3 Nebraska 4-3 in the second match of the day.

"We're happy that we got the win in the second match, but we could have finished that probably in five or six games," Petrin said. "We did well to grind through a pair that was very hard. We won one of those games with a 160, so that lets you know how those lanes were. I think both teams split at least three times in that game."

In the event's finale, the team suffered a 4-2 loss to No. 15 Maryville University.

"In that match we made really good decisions and we were ahead of everything transition wise. We just didn't bowl well," Petrin said. "We got out bowled in that one."

The Hawks will now return home to host the MEAC No. 1 meet at Millsboro, Nov. 11-12 and then follow it up by hosting the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic, Nov. 18-20 also at Millsboro Lanes.

"We didn't have our best stuff and yet we still finished sixth, which was one of our best finishes last year," Petrin said. "We'll take what we learned during this weekend and apply it to our practices this week and then we'll do it again this weekend."

Senior Elizabeth Ross (Schenectady, New York) made the All-Tournament team with a second place overall individual performance on Saturday. It was her second All-Tournament team of the season in two events.
