PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore put up big numbers on Day 2 of the Music City Classic and despite a record of just 2-3 on the day in head-to-head matchups it finished Saturday (March 19) in fifth place and in contention for a title.
"Today the game plan was to do everything we did yesterday again today, just a little bit better," Hawks coach Roger Petrin said. "Today was a little bit better. We scored better and made faster adjustments. I know we only went 2-3. It was just unfortunate timing of hitting teams at the point where they hit their best scores of the weekend. However, we wrapped up the two days qualifying 5th in the strongest field of the year. This is great and we are happy with our results. Now just complete the weekend with a strong showing tomorrow."
The squad averaged 202.1 over the first two days of competition.
Junior Brooke Roberts (Port Orange, Florida) paced The Shore (69-47-11-5 MEAC) in five Traditional matches with an average of 232.40 — good enough for 4th place overall.
Graduate student Paulina Torres (Ponce, Puerto Rico) finished 13th with a 219.00 average.
Sophomore Brooke Driver (Woodbridge, Virginia) averaged 201.60 over five.
National Tenpin Coaches Association No. 16 Eastern Shore topped Carool University (988-782) and Carthage College (1044-843), but fell to No. 7 Arkansas State, No. 8 Stephen F. Austin and No. 22 Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The Hawks open bracket play on Sunday (March 20) against North Carolina A&T State.
