DEPTFORD, New Jersey — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore rebounded from a difficult start on Saturday (Jan. 21) at the Northeast Classic to pick up the day's first win against No. 7 Youngstown State and will head into bracket play on Sunday in 15th place in total pinfall.
"I have never been swept for a whole day as a college coach, so I'm glad we were able to pick up the one win and we definitely got our breaks in that one," Hawks head coach Roger Petrin said. "It was one of those hammer meets nail kind of days and we were definitely the nail."
The Hawks (44-24, 6-2 MEAC) also got a 279 from graduate transfer Alyssa Zombirt (Southaven, Mississippi) which helped with the win against the Penguins. Zombirt averaged 228 over three matches. Brooke Roberts (Port Orange, Florida) had a five-game average f 205.40.
"I think how we approach the fresh on Sunday will have to be what we do different," Petrin said. "We had a couple girls that were able to come in for the second match and their shapes were a little bit better. Then it's just repositioning how we approach as the lanes break down. It's a mix of things."
No. 10 UMES will open bracket play against National Tenpin Coaches Association No. 10 Mount St. Mary's.
