Hawk bowling finishes ninth at Track Kat Klash

HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore bowling team had a record of 8-5 and a ninth place finish during this weekend's Track Kat Klash at Emerald Lanes in Houston, Texas. With the latest results, the Hawks now have an overall record of 17-9 overall.

Entering the event ranked No. 12 in the nation, UMES went 4-1 in the opening day of competition.

"Our first day of bowling was one of the strongest I have experienced at UMES," said head coach Roger Petrin. "We had an average of over 206 and positioned ourselves to be in great shape to compete this weekend."

As a team, UMES had a combined for an opening round pin count of 5,156 and an average of 206.2. Louisiana Tech is currently leading the event with 5,379 pins and an average of 215.2.

The Hawks began Friday with a 1002-745 win over Alabama State. In the second match of the day, the Hawks beat ninth ranked Maryville thanks to a season-high score of 1098 to Maryville's 929 total.

After falling to tenth ranked Louisiana Tech by a score of 1088 to 954, the Hawks rallied with a 1090 to 703 win over Texas Southern and a 1012 to 812 victory over Central Missouri to end Friday's competition.

Entering Saturday in fourth place, the Hawks experienced an up and down day on the lanes.

UMES started Saturday on a positive note with 983-646 win over Grambling State University. The Hawks ran into a hot Sam Houston State team in the second match of the day. The event hosts and eighth ranked team in the nation bowled a score of 1,117 to the UMES score of 822 to land the Hawk momentum.

In what may have been the best back-and-forth match of Saturday's competition, the Hawks edged Oklahoma Christian with a score of 1,064 to 1,021. UMES maintained momentum against fourth ranked North Carolina A&T with a 905 to 869 win which marked the second win over the Aggies this season.

In final match on Saturday, the Hawks tallied 911 pins and fell to a Lewis University score of 955 to go 3-2 for the afternoon and 7-3 over the span of two days.

As a team, the Hawks knocked down 5,156 pins in baker-format play and 4,685 pins in traditional scoring for a combined total of 9,841 and an average of 196.8 entering Sunday's bracket style format.

Facing OCU again in the opening match on Sunday, UMES jumped out to 2-1 lead. A one-pin loss in the third game, 191-190, proved to be a difference maker for OCU as they went on to take the next two games over the Hawks on their way to a 4-2 win. The Hawks faced Lewis in the second match of the day and battled back from a 3-1 deficit with a 188-175 win in the fourth game and a 224-208 win in the sixth before Lewis came back for the win in a 2-4-176 victory to take the 4-3 decision.

UMES ended its Texas trip on a high note by jumping out to a 2-0 lead over Central Missouri and went on to a one-sided 4-1 win to take ninth place in the event.

"After a tremendous start to the weekend, we did not perform with enough consistency on Saturday or Sunday," said Petrin. "I thought we had an opportunity to compete and win in every match we had this weekend but we missed too many opportunities and could not execute enough in crucial moments to get the result we want. As we move forward, we will continue to analyze what we did right and what we need to correct."

The Hawks three-day totals included a total of 13,406 pins and a 197.1 scoring average in 68 total games.

Brooke Roberts proved to be the Hawks' top performer with a 14th place in individual competition with a 203.20 scoring average and a total of 1,016 pins. Gabriella Ochoa Hubbard was close behind Roberts with a 17th place result with a score of 995 and an average of 199.00.

Louisiana Tech claimed the team title over host Sam Houston State while the University of Nebraska's Lani Breedlove won the individual title with a pin count of 1,130 and an average of 226.00.

The Hawks will be back in action on Saturday in MEAC competition at AMF Woodlawn Lanes in Baltimore, Maryland.
