Hawks take a beating at second MEAC Meet of season

UMES turns attention to Stallings invite

GREENSBORO, North Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore had a tough day at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference No. 2 meet finishing the day 1-3 and the event with a 4-4 mark.

"Still kind of at a loss. The results could have been better, but exactly how we could have achieved that I'm still not sure," Petrins said. "The scores were not very high for most teams overall and there wasn't a clear picture of what needed to happen."

The Hawks (58-33, 10-6 MEAC) did pick up their lone victory against National Tenpin Coaches Association No. 16 Delaware State by a score of 998-950. They lost decisions to University of Alabama Birmingham (1042-960), Monmouth University (932-855) and No. 6 and host North Carolina A&T State.

"We can make all the excuses that we want on different things like the low scores, the transition wasn't consistent and a number of other things," Petrin said. "But we just didn't perform well enough and we didn't execute well enough."

No 10 UMES will return to action Feb. 24-26 at the Vern Stallings Invitational, which will also be hosted by the Aggies.

"The girls will still get tomorrow off for a mental break," Petrin said. "We aren't going to do anything different. Tuesday and Wednesday we'll continue doing what we have been doing all year. We have made progress. We just continue pounding the stone."
