Hawks ready to turn page to Stalling Invite

UMES looking to rebound from tough weekend

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore won't want to think about the results of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference No. 2 meet last weekend as they return to Greensboro, North Carolina for this weekend's Vern Stallings Invitational.

Like the MEAC No. 2, Stallings is hosted by North Carolina A&T State, but will be contested in a completely different center than last weekend's event. That is more than fine with Hawks head coach Roger Petrin.

"I didn't even really talk about last week with the team," Petrin said. "We talked a little bit, but mainly that was about how when we see things like that we have to learn how to grind and fill frames. There was a lot of overthinking last weekend instead of focusing on making quality shots."

The National Tenpin Coaches Association No. 10 Hawks (58-33, 10-6 MEAC) finished last weekend's event with a 4-4 record, which was not one of their better finishes despite bowling all eight matches and a bye in Traditional format. Getting back to a standard format event may be just what the team needs as they look to turn it around this weekend.

"We just need to get the pins that we can get," Petrin said. "The MEAC meets are just a little bit different in that it forces us to focus more on individual match wins and losses instead of just the overall picture just knocking pins down. That is one of the things that I am trying to be better at as a coach and to get them to be better at as players. We need to go out and knock pins down and be aware of the scoring pace, but not aware of what the team is doing right across the lane from us."

Competition will begin on Friday at 9:55 a.m. with five five-game Baker matches.
