GREENSBORO, North Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore put together a 3-1 day at the Stallings Invitational knocking off a pair of National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 squads and moving up to third place in total pinfall with one match remaining until bracket play.
UMES (65-34, 10-6 MEAC) will face Florida A&M on Sunday morning in the final Traditional match of the event and then the field will move into a two-game bracket based on four-team pods.
"We really want to stay in the Top 4 grouping," Hawks coach Roger Petrin said. "Ideally we'd stay in No. 2 or No. 3 and stay away from the one seed because Vanderbilt has bowled pretty well all weekend."
The Hawks opened the day with a 979-918 win against No. 22 Tulane and then top No. 21 Lincoln Memorial 973-921. Next came a 976-892 loss to No. 6 and host North Carolina A&T State.
"We were able to bowl fairly decently today," Petrin said. "We had a couple of 890s in there where we were ahead of transition and fell backwards to 890, so overall we played the lanes better today and we were able to put a few more strings together and we were able to shoot our first 1,000 in a couple of events, so that was good."
UMES finished the day with an 890 in the bye and a 1005-876 win against Coppin State.
