HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With a tough bracketed draw, the Maryland Eastern Shore bowling team faced off against #15 Mount St. Mary's in their first match of the day. The Mount quickly took control of the Hawks with a 3-0 lead to start before UMES dominated game four to stay alive in the matchup. A close game in the fifth saw Mount St. Mary's escape with the 4-1 win.
  • UMES would rebound in its second bracketed contest of the day against fellow MEAC opponent UAB. This time it was the Hawks who got on board first and took control with a 3-0 start. After the Blazers took the fourth game, UMES would solidly win the fifth by over 50 pins to improve to 1-1 on the day.
  • In their final contest of the Northeast Classic, the Hawks faced off against #20 Oklahoma Christian. The Eagles would take game one by just eight pins and would go on to claim game two as well. In game three, it was the Hawks who picked up the close win by only five pins to cut their deficit in half. OCU went on to win games four and five as UMES would finish in 14th place in the 34-team field.
  • Gabby Ochoa (Gabriella Ochoa Hubbard) finished 12th as an individual with a pin total of 1,094.
SPARE THOUGHTS WITH COACH PETRIN
  • "We have bowled ok today, but I know we can do better. We are certainly capable of that and I look forward to that."
  • "Having Gabby place in the top-15 as an event like this, with so many top teams from around the country bowling, it shows she is right there with the best."
  • "We have a few weeks before our next competition so some rest and we will be right back at it."
UP NEXT
  • UMES returns to the lanes on Saturday, Feb. 17 when they travel to Norfolk for the MEAC No. 2. Teams from across the conference will meet up one last time for the two-day event, one month before the MEAC Championship in Raleigh, N.C.
