Hawks finish in 8th at Track Kat Klash

Mariana Santos Rivero earns tournament MVP honors

HOUSTON, Texas – Through the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's second tournament of the season, the Hawks finished eighth as a team among the competition. 

While the team fell behind the pack, senior Mariana Santos Rivero excelled through the individual matches and earned tournament MVP honors with a tournament-high pinfall of 1,085, averaging 217Mariana Santos Rivero and Jayda Gordon - Track Kat Klash 2025 per game. Additionally, senior Jayda Gordon also captured All-Tournament team honors with a fifth place individual finish with 1,031 pinfall and 206.2 finish. 

Through the first day of competition with five Baker matches the Hawks split the day 2-2 while bowling through a bye round. UMES dropped the first match of the tournament to Sam Houston State, 1,049-803, before rebounding to take a 872-862 win against Jackson State in the next match. The Hawks earned a second win against Alabama State with a 972-758 score before a bye in the fourth round while recording a 971 score. In the final match of the day, UMES dropped a 1,006-864 match against North Carolina A&T. 

In Saturday's five traditional matches, the Hawks took an opening win against Southern University, 925-758, before losing a close match against Wichita State, 1,077-928, and another matchup to Louisiana Tech, 972-904. The Hawks split the last two matches of the day with a close loss to Newman University, 935-931, before earning a 899-861 win against Texas Southern. 

Entering Sunday's championship round of Baker matches, the Hawks came in ranked seventh in the field. While UMES earned an wins against Oklahoma Christian, 828-799, and Prairie View A&M, 880-755, the Hawks dropped their rubber match against Tulane 980-971 to finish eighth in the tournament. 

Through the Hawks' individual finishes, Ara Pitts averaged 167.8 pins to finish in the top third of bowlers at the tournament while Mariane Almeida and Sofia Tosto Valenzuela were just behind with averages of163.8 and 162.6, respectively.

UMES will next travel to Baltimore for its next tournament November 8-9 for the MEAC No. 1 tournament.
