Damion Drummond

Alma Mater: Maryland Eastern Shore ‘06

Entering his sixth season as the head coach of both the Maryland Eastern Shore Cross Country and Track & Field Programs, Damion Drummond looks to build on the success of the Hawks running programs since taking the helm.

Before the unexpected COVID-19 Pandemic shut down both programs for the 2020-21 seasons across Indoor Track, Outdoor Track and Cross Country, Drummond and the Shore had begun making huge strides to make a mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

At the conclusion of the 2019 Cross Country season, Drummond led the men’s and women’s squads to third and second places finishes, respectively, in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships.

The 2019-20 seasons for indoor track were also quite successful, as both teams finished fourth in the MEAC championships – including a conference record of 17:20.24 being ran in the women’s 5000m and three individuals bringing home IC4A/ECAC All-East Team distinctions.

Unfortunately for the program, the Hawks were unable to participate in the 2021 Outdoor Track season as the University had opted out of competition.

During Drummond’s five-year tenure, has seen several other team and individual successes, including one NCAA 1st Round Qualifier (Men's 3000m Steeple Chase) and 10 IC4A/ECAC All-East Team Distinctions.

Drummond, a native of Brooklyn, New York by the way of Jamaica West Indies, originally attended the University of Tennessee from 2001 to 2002, where he was part of SEC title winning teams in both indoor and outdoor track. Following his start as a Volunteer, Drummond transferred to Maryland Eastern Shore where he had an immediate impact on the program. During his time as a student-athlete with the Hawks, Drummond was an All-MEAC middle-distance runner where he set conference championship records in the 800m for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Additionally, Drummond was part of the school’s record setting distance medley team in 2003, a record that stood until 2017.

Since graduating from Maryland Eastern Shore in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Drummond has been committed to coaching student-athletes, starting as a graduate and volunteer assistant with the Hawks from 2006-2009. During that time the Hawks excelled in Cross Country, winning three MEAC titles as well as a co-championship for the women’s indoor team in 2008.

Following earning his Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling in 2008, Drummond took over nearby Washington High School’s track program from 2009-10 where the Jaguars took home two regional titles while on the individual front, he coached a state champion and 12 regional champions.

Drummond moved into the college coaching ranks yet again, leaving Princess Anne for the first time since arriving to the Shore, first heading to NAIA Mount Mercy University (IA) and then to former MEAC rival Hampton University. While at Hampton Drummond had a hand at shaping the student-athletes to eight MEAC titles, two individual MVPs and a solo MEAC indoor champion.

After assisting the Pirates, Drummond made his first move into becoming a head coach, taking over Lincoln University (PA) where he almost instantaneously was named CIAA Coach of the Year as he took the women’s cross country team to its first CIAA title since the Lions reclassified to Division II. Not only were the Lions successful as athletes, they also earned All-Academic distinctions from the United States Track & Field Cross County Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

With his success at Lincoln, Drummond quickly moved to Delaware State University, becoming a Division I head coach of the Track & Field programs. With the rival Hornets, Delaware State send a 400m runner to the NCAA First Round as well as had two individuals and one relay squad earning IC4A/ECAC All-East honors. Encapsulating the definition of student-athletes, Drummonds Hornets were named 2017 Hornet Cup winners, which is awarded to the top athletic program that excels on campus and within the surrounding community through academic achievement, sport performance, campus stewardship, community services and volunteerism.

In addition to his head coaching duties with Maryland Eastern Shore, Drummond also currently serves as the MEAC conference coaches representative as a committee member on the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
