TALLAHASSEE, FL- In a battle of the top two teams in the MEAC, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks volleyball team's nine-match winning streak ended Thursday night in Tallahassee at the hands of the Florida A&M Rattlerettes. The Rattlerettes (14-3, 7-0 MEAC) remained perfect in the conference with the three-game victory, by scores of 30-22, 30-20 and 30-25. The Hawks (17-9, 5-1) dropped their first conference match.
Maria Andonova led the Florida A&M with twelve kills, two assists and two digs, while Jayli Jackson, Adriana Kostadinova and Andreina Ruiz each had ten kills apiece. Setter Mariela Portocarrero recorded 38 assists for the Rattlerettes.
Sophomore Jana Milin once again paced UMES with ten kills and four digs, and junior Mamie Lewis added nine kills and two digs. Freshman setter Sanda Dzile picked up 24 assists in the losing effort.
The Hawks travel further south Friday for their next match in Daytona Beach against Bethune Cookman at 4:00 p.m. UMES returns to action at Tawes Gymnasium in two weeks, with a match against North Carolina A&T Thursday October 30th at 6:00 p.m. Admission to all Hawk home matches are free to the public.
