HAWKS TENNIS DROPS OPENING MATCH TO DELAWARE STATE

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's and women's tennis teams opened its season against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent Delaware State on Friday afternoon. The Hawks (0-1, 0-1) dropped both of their match to DUS (1-3, 1-0)as the women were edged out 4-3, while the men fell, 6-0.

On the women's side the Hawks top three flights all lost, none winning more than one total game in the two sets. However, UMES rallied to pull even as they swept the final three singles matches led by Candace Tyler's three set marathon. She defeated Sherlita Boyel 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), and 10-3.

Delaware State secured the victory in the doubles matches as it won both number one and two doubles 8-0 and 8-1. UMES earned a victory in the third doubles match by forfeit as DSU had already won the doubles point.

On the men's side, number two singles Robin Schneider took James Lapere to a full three sets before falling 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-4. In the number six flight single Max Miller held a one set to none lead before the match was called and the match was not finished.

In doubles UMES's third doubles recorded the Hawks only victory as Schneider and Miller defeated Adae Amoako and Olumide Ayeni, 8-2. In the first two doubles matches, UMES lost close battles falling 8-6 in both dropping the doubles point.

The women's tennis team will return to action this coming Thursday as they welcome Towson University to Princess Anne, MD. They will then join up with the men for their next match on October 22nd as they travel to Baltimore, MD to face Coppin State at 11:00 am.
