Washington, D.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) continued their solid play one night after coming off of a MEAC North title clinching win. Tonight's win came over the Lady Bison of Howard University 3-0 (30-27, 30-28, 30-20).
The Hawks (14-13, 7-2 MEAC) won the match, their seventh win in their last eight matches, behind the strong play of Jana Milin who recorded 18 kills, six service aces and nine digs. Every Hawk played tonight as junior Mandie Dever turned in another solid performance recording 12 kills and five digs. Kate Smith pitched in a match high 41 assists.
Despite some bus troubles the Hawks still arrived on time to hit an outstanding .324 for the match, committing only 18 errors to their 53 kills. Their defense was also solid recording two blocks, 38 digs and forcing Howard to hit just .225.
The win gave the Hawks the season sweep of Howard and pushed their record over the .500 mark for the first time since they defeated this same Howard squad on September 21, 2004 when they improved to 7-6.
UMES returns home to play another non-conference match against the Loyola Greyhounds on Wednesday, October 27 at 7:00 pm in Tawes Gymnasium.
