Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (UMES) (2-11) struggled on the mound for the second straight game, using seven different pitchers as their starting rotation was unable to go having pitched over the last three days. They fell to the Eagles of Coppin State College (2-6) by a score of 21-9.
The Hawks still managed to pound out 12 hits and score nine times. Their pitching, still exhausted from a long weekend allowed 18 earned runs on 22 Eagle hits.
Centerfielder Joel Maher and designated hitter Graylon Kitchens each collected two hits on four at bats. Maher scored twice and had one RBI while Kitchens scored one run. Pete Mayta went 1-5 with a run and RBI while first baseman Greg Cathell was 1-4 with an RBI and two runs. The entire starting line-up for the Hawks had at least one hit each.
Bobby Shaw, coming off an incredible 4-5 day on Sunday was 1-3 with a RBI, Anthony Jackson was 1-3 with an RBI, and Kaz Beverly went 1-3. Catcher Butch Mills went 1-3 at the plate until he was lifted for pinch runner, James Walls, who stayed in and caught. He collected his first collegiate hit going 1-2 while scoring two runs.
UMES scored consistently today getting one run in the second, fourth, and fifth innings and getting two across in the third, sixth and ninth innings. They just could not recover from Coppin's run total. Leon Tilghman got the loss for the Hawks pitching just two innings and allowing three earned runs. He drops to 0-3 on the season. Fellow starters Dereck Casper, Sean Davis, and Graylon Kitchens all pitched as well. Casper allowed five earned in no official innings of work, Davis, four in one inning, and Kitchens two in three innings. Relievers Ryan Blevins, Jeremiah Speakes, and Shaw also pitched with Blevins fairing the best giving up no runs of his own in two innings of work while Shaw gave up two in one inning. Speakes, making his season debut could not get the knuckle ball going allowing two runs in one official innings.
Coppin put together five run innings in the third and fifth, and a four run sixth inning. They also scored two runs in the second, eighth, and ninth innings. UMES shut them out in the seventh and gave up just one in the opening inning.
Teon Richburg was 4-4 for the Eagles, Nick Wenger and Eddie Wilson were both 3-5, and Eduardo Emmerich was 3-6. Wenger, Richburg, and Juston Riggs recorded three RBIs each and Riggs recorded a home run in the fifth inning. Emmerich and Amiel Traynum had two RBIs apiece. Tommy Stratchko got the win on the hill to go 1-0 on the season.
The Hawks will regroup and host Central Connecticut on Thursday in a double header starting at 1:00 pm at hawk's stadium.
