COPPIN STATE SOFTBALL SWEEPS HAWKS; JOHNSON LOST FOR SEASON

The UMES softball team dropped a pair to the Coppin State Eagles in a MEAC doubleheader by scores of 6-1 and 4-0 at the Bachman Complex. The Hawks (4-33, 3-13 MEAC) not only lost the games, but also leading hitter Marlee Johnson for the remainder of the season to a broken wrist after she was hit by a pitch in game one.

UMES collected nine hits on the day but could only manage to plate one run against the combination of Jamie Imhof (seven innings, 10 strikeouts) in game one and Ajaye Pope (seven innings, no runs) in game two. Christina Mason pitched all 12 innings for the Hawks and allowed eight earned runs on 18 hits.

Johnson was hit by an Imhof pitch while leading off the second inning in game one, and fractured her wrist in the process. The junior was batting a career-best .326 and had a team-high 28 hits on the season.
