Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) won its fourth match in a row overall, and remained perfect in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with a 33-31, 30-23, 30-28 victory over visiting Howard University.
In game one, the Hawks (7-6, 2-0) and Bison (2-7, 1-1) exchanged leads throughout the match, but it was the service game that kept UMES within striking distance. Behind the consistent abilities of Jana Milin (Pula, Croatia/Univ. of Economics), who at one point had five consecutive aces, the Hawks took control of game one very late, winning 33-31.
Following the excitement of the first game, the Hawks cruised through the second game as Milin again lead the team utilizing her dominate serve. With four more service aces, Milin provided UMES with a 9-1 advantage early, which this time they never relinquished.
In the third game, UMES fell behind early, 11-4. However they rebounded quickly and tied the game at 13-13, eventually taking a 15-14 lead. Similarly to the first game, both teams battled with neither one taking a commanding lead, until the Hawks were able to stretch the lead late to 28-25 and close out the match 30-28 on a Milin kill.
Overall, the Hawks too full advantage of the Bison's failure to return serves as UMES totaled 16 service aces, including eight in the first game alone. Milin, who leads the team with 60 aces, had a season-high 11 service aces, which is the most for her since November 21st when the Hawks also played Howard.
Leading the Hawk attack was Milin and senior Mamie Lewis (Tallahassee, FL/Indian River C.C.), who was recently named the MEAC Player of the Week. Milin finished the evening with 16 kills, 10 digs and 11 aces, while Lewis chipped in with 13 kills and two blocking assists.
Freshman Kate Smith (Carpentersville, IL/Dundee Crown) provided much of the offensive success with 41 assists, while defensively senior Aja Smith (Tampa, FL/Indian River C.C.) had a team-high 11 digs.
The Hawks will return to action this weekend as they travel to Storrs, CT to take on UConn and Marquette University on Saturday, Sept. 25th at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
