DAYTONA BEACH, FL. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawks lost a tough contest to Bethune Cookman, 61-58, falling to the Wildcats after taking a 13 point lead at the half.
UMES (1-11, 0-4 MEAC) started the game on a roll, going on a 17-7 run in the first six minutes of play. Junior Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill./Ellsworth CC) was strong for the second straight game, scoring 10 of the Hawks' 17 points during that run.
UMES had their highest lead of the night at 7:57, taking a 15 point lead off of a trey by Corey Brown (Ruthville, Va./Mott CC). A pair of free throws by Antonio Webb and a fast break lay-up by Diondre Larmond cut the Hawk lead to 11 at 4:04, but a basket by senior Jason McKinnon (Chicago, Ill./Kennedy King CC) gave UMES a 13 point lead, which they took into the halftime break.
Parham led all scorers at the half, scoring 10 points in eight minutes. McKinnon had nine points, while Antonio Webb's six points led Bethune Cookman.
The Wildcats fought back in the second half, cutting the Hawk lead to nine points at 14:42 behind several missed jumpers by UMES. The Fighting Hawks fought back, pushing the lead back to double digits off of a Brown three pointer at 10:33.
However the lead was short lived, as Bethune Cookman battled back to take the lead with just under three minutes remaining in the game. Five straight points by Kory Crumbly gave the Wildcats a one point advantage at 2:52, leading the Hawks 56-55.
Two UMES turnovers led to Bethune Cookman taking a three point lead at 1:49. The Fighting Hawks were able to pull within two points with 18 seconds remaining but the effort was not enough as the Wildcats held on to win the game, 61-58.
Parham had a double-double, finishing with a game high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Brown had 14 points and four assists, while McKinnon chipped in with 10 points. Michael Williams was the high scorer for Bethune Cookman, scoring 15 points in 25 minutes. Webb added 11, while Jordan Carrier finished with 10.
UMES will face Hampton in their next game, facing the Pirates on the road on Monday, January 17.
