DOVER, DE - Delaware State University out-slugged Maryland Eastern Shore in the final game of a three-game weekend series as the Hornets took all three from the Fighting Hawks. UMES fell behind 7-0 in the first inning and eventually fell 17-5, as DSU hit four homeruns on the afternoon.
In the first inning, the Hornets recorded seven runs on six hits, highlighted by back-to-back homerun's by Justin Wenger and Matt Folke on consecutive pitches. Starting pitcher, Sean Davis last only one-third of an inning as he gave up six runs on four hits facing only seven batters. Daniel Sterling replaced Davis and was able to get out of the inning without to much more damage.
However, after the Hawks scored four in the top of the second to cut into the lead, Sterling allowed three more runs to cross the plate before he was replaced by Butch Mills. UMES trailed 10-4 after two innings and from that point Delaware State just piled on to walk away with the sweep.
Kevin Hill homered in the fourth inning, driving in two runs and Dan Cleary closed out the scoring with a solo-shot in the sixth. UMES used six pitchers on the afternoon. Dusty Webster performed well in the loss as he threw three innings allowing only the solo-homerun to Cleary.
The Fighting Hawks will begin a long and difficult week of play as they play host to Temple University on Tuesday afternoon as UMES begins a week-long home-stand of eight games in five days.
